The Catalonian architecture hits you around every corner from gothic to Gaudi. A visit to the unfinished Sagrada Familia is a must for any visit as well as one of Gaudi's house museums such as the bizarre Casa Batilo. Explore Barri Gotic taking in the cathedral and Las Ramblas.

Head to Mercat de la Boqueria and wonder through narrows lanes of stalls selling fruit and veg, fish, meat, cheese and chocolates to whet your appetite. There are several popular tapas bars at the back of the market that serves outstanding seafood tapas fresh from the market.

A visit to Barcelona would be amiss without strutting your stuff down the packed, sun soaked beaches and lazing an afternoon away, watching Catalonian life drift by.

At night head to El Ravel, a quirky part of town with good restaurants and bars including Palosanto and the London Bar which was a famous haunt of Hemmingway and Picasso.

Hire a car or join a tour of the peninsular and visit the Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach to see the penguins and Muizenberg Beach which is popular with surfers and for a photo opportunity at the brightly painted beach huts. Stellenbosch known for its world class wineries, restaurants and Cape Dutch architecture is also only a short distance away from the city.
