'The city of columns'

Once home to American novelist Ernest Hemingway, further immortalised in Graham Greene's 'Our Man in Havana', and placed firmly in the archives of musical history by the Buena Vista Social Club, Cuba's capital city is not a holiday destination that immediately springs to mind. Yet it has much to offer travellers who want more than to simply fry on a beach all day.

Founded by the Spanish about five hundred years ago, Havana's visual mishmash of architectural styles – from baroque and neoclassic to Art Deco – prompted Lorca, Cuba's best known intellectual, to nickname Havana 'the city of columns'.

Parts of the city are stuck in a time-warp, its busy streets dotted with 1950's American classic cars initially taking one by surprise. There are all the usual sorts of museums and galleries you would expect too, but how about a stroll through the Cigar or Chocolate Museums, or visiting Hemingway's old haunt El Floridita?

After dark head to the Old Town (Habana Vieja) to enjoy the famous nightspots and clubs, or visit Havana's Chinatown on the Zanja Canal for something to eat.
