"Venice of the North"

Also known as the Venice of the North, Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and one of the most popular travel destinations in Europe. With its 90 islands, lovely canals and more than 1500 bridges, this city casts magic spell on travelers. Amsterdam is commonly known for its tolerance, and red light district.

With many convenient connections from most regional airports booking cheap flight tickets to Amsterdam is easy quick and inexpensive, in fact in many cases it is easier to get to Amsterdam from your local airport than it is to travel to London

Amsterdam was first established as a small fishing village in the 12th century and later grew into one of the most important trading centers of the world, during the so-called Dutch Golden Age. Due to this inflow of revenue, many beautiful and truly impressive buildings were built. Also, it made the city expand rapidly, which is why the Canal Belt was built. This part of the city now is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With about 7000 registered historic buildings, there’s plenty to see in Amsterdam. We recommend a walk through the city center – particularly along Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat. Another thing to check out is the Canal Ring with the beautiful mansions along the main canals. Don’t miss paying a visit to the impressive Magere Brug.

The Netherlands still is home to a monarchy. You will find the church, in which the kings are crowned in Dam Square. In 2013, the Nieuwe Kerk was the site of King Willem-Alexander’s coronation. Also, one of the oldest churches, the Oude Kerk, is located in the in the Oudezijds Voorburgwal – the red-light district.

If you want to do some shopping, you should check out the Jordaan. And, of course, a visit to the Van Gogh Museum should be on your bucket list as well!

Due to the city center being small, you can easily get around by foot. However, there also exists an extensive public transport network. If you do not want to walk, there is a metro, a convenient tram line as well as bus coverage. If you like it fancy, you can book a boat and get around on the channels! Also, there is a ferry service with fixed routes.

If you want to see the famous tulip fields, you should go to Amsterdam in spring, most particularly in April. However, it is possible to visit Amsterdam all year round. It may get a bit cold in winter, as temperatures turn to close to 0 degrees.
