"The Land of Honey"

The Maltese islands sit in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea just south of Sicily, the main islands of Malta and Gozo are accompanied by little Comino which is mostly uninhabited apart from the staff of its only hotel, an idyllic getaway for those that want peace and tranquillity.

Malta is one of those destinations you either fall completely in love with or would rather not visit again, with its strong alliance to Britain throughout its history the Maltese people are warm and friendly towards the British and are a very proud nation having survived countless attacks and sieges throughout history, the full and fascinating story of the islands are told in a short film entitled "The Malta Experience" in a theatre in the capital Valetta. During WWII, because of their strategic position the Maltese Islands became the subject of a fiercely contested battle which proved to be a pivotal point of the war. The island also has some of the earliest signs of human life in Europe with some sites dating back over 5,000 years BC.

Although there are many beaches and bays dotted around the island with lush golden sands and turquoise waters, some of the rocky coastline has some fantastic coves and natural swimming pools, St Peters Pool in Marsaxlokk for one is a divers paradise with deep crystal clear water and a range of rocky ledges to dive off of, if its underwater diving you are interested in then Malta is definitely the island for you a number of wrecks are dotted around the island many in conservation areas add that to the crystal clear waters and it is no wonder these islands attract divers from all over the globe.

The capital Valletta and the old Capital Mdina with their bastion walls and cobbled streets take you back to medieval times whilst the more modern popular resorts of St Julian's and Sliema offer great bars and nightlife.

The Maltese festas are an amazing opportunity for visitors to really experience Maltese culture, starting around Easter week and running right throughout summer and into late September each village has a patron saint whose statue is taken from the church and paraded around the streets while the brass band plays and numerous traditional sweet treats are sold from market stalls that line the main streets and town square.

Malta enjoys almost year round sunshine so there is no real "best time to visit" anytime between March and October and you are guaranteed sunshine, some would say that the summer months of July and August are just too hot, saying this makes Malta the perfect off season destination.
