5 Things to do in Valkenburg (The Netherlands)

Valkenburg is a small town in the south of the Netherlands, around 30km from Amsterdam. Even though it's small, every year many tourists visit Valkenburg. Here's 5 thing to do when you're in Valkenburg!

#1. Gemeentegrot

I really recommend a visit to the 'Gemeentegrot'. Translated it means: 'municipal caves'. The Romans started these caves because they were mining for marl. Marl was used as a building material. Valkenburg still has houses made from marl. During cold winters, people used to stay in the caves to survive the winter. In the last days of the second world war, the cave has also been used as a hiding place. These days, you can get a tour in the municipal caves with an explanation of what happened and to hear all the stories. It's possible to do a tour by foot or by a small train. Around Christmas, there's a Christmas market in the caves. A unique kind of Christmas market. Definitely worth a visit!

#2. De Valkenier

If you have kids, this is the place to go! The Valkenier is a small amusement park and quite cheap to visit. It has over 25 attractions. There are both indoors and outdoor attractions! You enjoy a ride on the Ferris wheel or slide down in the Cobra. There's also a moon rocket, roller coaster, playground for disabled children and more. New in 2017 is Pirate Island!

#3. Thermae 2000

When it's time to relax, you can go to Thermae 2000, a wellness center in Valkenburg. They have an amazing swimming pool, sauna's and you can get a massage. You can get a room at Thermae 2000 and stay there. You can also have dinner & lunch or pick one of the many the many treatments they have to offer. I've been to Thermae 2000 several times myself. It's a great choice if you want a relaxing day. Whether you like to enjoy the sauna, be in the thermal baths or get a treatment.

#4. Valkenburg Castle Ruins

This castle was probably built during the 11th century. It's been destroyed on December 10th, 1672. It's a unique castle in the Netherlands: The only castle that's been built on a hill. Today, you can see the ruins of the castle in Valkenburg. You can visit the castle ruins and see the old rooms, the old chapel and escape passages to the Velvet Cave. You can also visit the velvet caves and learn more about the secret passageways!

#5. A Go Go Valkenburg

When you're ready for some action, go to A Go Go Valkenburg. There's a lot you can do there. A chairlift will take you up to the WIlhelminatower. Up there you can enjoy an amazing view and have lunch at the tower. If you want an ever better view: Climb the stairs and watch Valkenburg from the top of the tower. And if you're really feeling adventurous: In the touristic season, you can go down again via a zip line! You can fly down via a 100-meter long rope. And there's more you can do: Toboggan, mini golf, laser tag and more!

When you're done with all the activities, visit the center of Valkenburg. There are many many great restaurants and cafés! Enjoy a good meal. And if you still have time: Make a walk in the surroundings. Valkenburg is a beautiful place for an afternoon walk to enjoy the nature!
