Fuerteventura is the Perfect Getaway Off Season Break

Depending on which language you translate from, Fuerteventura could mean "Strong Wind" or "Great Adventure" so it's no surprise this the oldest Canary Island is a magnet to water sports and wind sports enthusiasts.

Being an all year round destination Fuerteventura is the perfect getaway for an off season break with a number of cheap flights available from many regional airports across the UK.

The beach resort of Caleta de Fuste is one of the larger purpose built resorts, with plenty of night life for all age groups, with a wide variety of accommodation options from luxury hotels through to small self-catering apartments and with the only golf course on the island Caleta de Fuste is the perfect choice for an all-round holiday.

The resorts on the North and West of the island are more popular with the surfers, in particular the resort of Corralejo with its surf schools and hire shops makes for a great base for the budding surfer.

A ferry service operates over to Lobos Island, an uninhabited island apart from a few restaurants it is home to a colony of seals and famed for its crystal clear waters and idyllic sandy beaches.

The harbour at Corralejo is also the starting place for some other great excursions, there are numerous fishing trips available, also dolphin excursions where you can spot or swim with these incredibly intelligent mammals and if that was not enough for you why not try an underwater submarine experience where you can really get up close and personal with the many varieties of marine life Fuerteventura has to offer.

Fuerteventura cuisine is famous for its goats not just the cheese but also for the meat, and for its Mojos a red pepper and olive oil sauce, being an island in the Atlantic the sea food is as fresh as it gets with Sword Fish, Tuna and Octopus on most menus. The potatoes grown on the island may resemble something we would normally throw out, small and wrinkly, however the "Papas Arrugadas" is a side dish that you have to try, very similar to Patatas Bravas but with a Canarian twist.

In comparison to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote, Fuerteventura is the more relaxed laid back island. So for a sporty break with some great excursions choose Fuerteventura it is sure to please.
