World City with Heart

Oktoberfest, Christmas markets, pork knuckles or other hefty meals: Bavarians know how to enjoy their down times! Of course, we’re talking about Munich, the modern and prosperous city with great historical sites in Southern Germany. In case you’re still hesitant: flights to Munich from UK are super cheap; and the city is home to great beer, BMW and Pretzels!

Munich was first mentioned in a document from 1158 and received city status in1175. Later, the city was a center of Renaissance art and of Baroque life. In 1806, the Kingdom of Bavaria was established. It is this time most of Munich’s architectural jewels date from. By far the most famous one is Schloss Neuschwanstein, which you will find about 1.5 hours from Munich. Built by Ludwig II of Bavaria, it is a true jewel of revival architecture and a must-see. Like most German cities, Munich was heavily damaged by the bombings in WWII and had to be rebuilt entirely. This is why it is, after all, a truly modern city!

Best start your Munich trip at the Marienplatz. If you want to make photos, come here early in the morning, as this square will be crowded by tourists later in the day. It is a must-see because of the nice architecture of the surrounding buildings: the New Town Hall in Gothic Revival style and the Old Town Hall in Late Gothic style. To see the spectacle of the Glockenspiel, you should prepare to be there at 11am and look at the New Town Hall.

A bit further westward, you are going to find the Frauenkirche in Gothic and Renaissance style. And, just around the corner, the St. Peter’s Church is greeting you with a mix of Renaissance and Baroque style. Take the effort to climb the 300 steps to its tower to get an amazing view of the city! Another highlight of Munich is the Residenz, which was the former city castle of the Bavarian rulers in Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and classical styles. To get an impression of their countryside castle, check out Nymphenburg castle with its magnificent Baroque style and gardens.

If you want to get an impression of Munich’s modern architecture, you should pay a visit to BMW World Munich – a building by Coop Himmelblau, which was especially designed and built for BMW and features a BMW museum! Round off your day with a pork knuckle, pretzels and a beer at the historic Hofbräuhaus or at the Augustinerbräu.

Munich is a city which is easily walkable and really bike-friendly. Also, the city has an extensive underground train, tram and bus network.

Travel to Munich anytime between April and October, when temperatures are comfortably warm.
