The Portuguese seaside city of Porto is a riot of colour, sunshine and history. One of the oldest cities in Europe, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a boat trip along the River Duoro and out to the mouth of the Atlantic and you will quickly see why.
The city sits behind a swathe of dramatic beaches dotted with little rocky coves. The riverside neighbourhoods are painted in bright yellows, reds, oranges and blues, giving the whole city a festive vibe.
The ancient roots of the city can be seen at the 900-year old Porto Cathedral, and in the baroque architecture of the Avenida dos Aliados.
But of course, Porto is most famous for its greatest export: port. Fortified wine is still produced along the banks of the Duoro, and port is enjoyed as a dessert wine across the city.
Visit the Vila Nova de Gaia neighbourhood of Porto to see the ancient cellars where the port barrels are aged – and of course it would be rude to leave without trying a glass or two while you're there…
